Amarsul was established on 24 March 1997 with the aim of developing, designing, building and operating a Selective Collection, Sorting and Treatment System for Solid Urban Waste in the Setúbal Peninsula. Amarsul's mission is to promote the sustainable management of urban waste, integrating recycling and energy recovery practices.
Area of operation:
Amarsul serves a population of around 800,000 inhabitants, covering the nine municipalities in the region: Alcochete, Almada, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra and Setúbal. The total area covered by Amarsul is approximately 1,625 km².
Activities and Services:
The company carries out a wide range of activities related to urban waste treatment and management, including:
Urban Waste Treatment: Processing of solid urban waste collected in the region.
Selective Collection and Sorting: Operation of an integrated system that includes the collection and sorting of materials for recycling.
Energy Recovery: Use of biogas produced in landfills to generate energy.
Composting: Transformation of organic urban waste into compost, promoting the recycling of nutrients.

To support its operations, Amarsul has the following infrastructure:

3 Energy Production Centres: Generate energy from biogas produced in landfills and through organic recovery.
1 Eco-Transfer Station: Facilitates waste transport and management.
7 Eco-Centres: Voluntary drop-off points for recyclable materials and specific types of waste.
1 Mechanical Treatment Plant: Processes urban waste to separate recyclable materials.
1 Composting Plant: Produces organic compost from biodegradable waste.
1 Organic Recovery Plant: Transforms organic waste into biogas and organic fertiliser.
1 Sorting Plant: Separates recyclable materials by type, in this case plastic and metal.
