Amarsul – Valorização e Tratamento de Resíduos Sólidos S.A. (Solid Waste Recovery and Treatment) was established in 1997 and was awarded the concession to operate and manage the Multimunicipal System for the Treatment and Selective Collection of Urban Waste on the South Bank of the Tagus for a period of 25 years, which was extended until 2034 following a review carried out in 2016.
In July 2015, Amarsul became part of the Mota-Engil group through the acquisition of Empresa Geral de Fomento (EGF), which holds 51% of Amarsul's share capital. This integration strengthened Amarsul's capacity to innovate and expand its services in the area of waste treatment and recovery.
In order to fulfil the objectives for which it was established, Amarsul constantly improves its treatment and recovery processes and seeks to equip its infrastructure with advanced technology that is appropriate to its needs, in order to meet the environmental sustainability objectives of the Setúbal peninsula.
Amarsul is responsible for the treatment and recovery of urban waste from the nine municipalities of the Setúbal Peninsula (Alcochete, Almada, Barreiro, Moita, Montijo, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra and Setúbal).
To fulfil its mission, Amarsul constantly improves its waste treatment and recovery processes, equipping its infrastructure with advanced technology. This ensures compliance with the environmental sustainability goals of the Setúbal Peninsula.
For the treatment and recovery of urban waste in the Setúbal Peninsula, Amarsul has a range of infrastructure and equipment, namely three Ecoparks in Palmela, Seixal and Setúbal, respectively, seven Ecocentres, an Eco-Transfer Station, a Composting Plant, an Organic Recovery Plant, a Mechanical Treatment Plant, a Biological Treatment Plant, two Biogas Energy Recovery Systems and a network of over 4,000 Ecopoints.
